Wild Flowers August, Part 1. Album Cards by Louis Prang

Prang produced a number of album card sets of various wild flowers, presumably by the months that they bloom in. There are 2 parts for May-August and one part for September.

These cards, in themselves, are not terribly hard to find. Some of the sets were published later and can be very difficult to complete. This particular set, August part 1, was published in 1863.

Nice orange color on this envelope front from 1863.

As with all of Prang’s album cards, there are 12 cards in Part 1 of August Wild Flowers. The cards are all vertical format with fine design details and both English and Latin names for the flowers.

Bladder Gampion from the August Part 1 set.

The names were in a lighter color than Prang’s typical black. The size of the font also varies across issues.

Grass Poly from August Part 1 album card set.

The cards are informative and attractive but ultimately not the most popular with collectors. Trying to piece together all 108 cards is quite a challenge though! I’ll be posting more sets for reference as it seems fitting with spring in the air.

Here is the checklist for August part 1:
Wild Balsam
Herb Robert
Grass Poly
Bladder Gampion
Willow Wort
Partridge Pea
Button Bush
Arrow Head
Blackberry Lily
Cardinal Flower
Purple Gerardia
Ground Nut

I have some notes on variations so if I locate any I’ll save them up and post them at the end. Happy Collecting!

I am nuts about early album cards from the 1860s-70s. And other cards and small lithographs. This space is to talk about all of them.
